Fluorocarbon
(VITON® / FKM)
FLUOROCARBON / FLUOROELASTOMER (VITON ®)
Viton® has excellent resistance to high temperatures, ozone, weather, oxygen, mineral oil, fuels, hydraulic fluids, aromatics and many solvents, and therefore used for o rings and cord. Fluorocarbon possesses low gas permeability, low compression set, and good mechanical properties.
High fluorine grades of Fluorocarbon offer higher resistance to swell in high octane and oxygenated fuel blends. This gives Fluorocarbon a superior performance in Ethanol/Methanol blended gasoline.
Combining high temperature resistance with outstanding chemical resistance, Fluorocarbon (also known as Fluoroelastomer) based compounds approach the ideal for a universal O-ring material.
Standard Fluorocarbon compounds are usually:
- Type A and are commonly available in 75 & 90 Shore Hardness: – V75 & V90. These compounds are normally stocked in Black although other colours can be manufactured, i.e. Brown / Green.
Other types are:
- Type B – Generally used in Chemical Process plants, Power Utility Seals & Gaskets
- Type F – Used for Oxygenated Automotive fuels. Concentrated aqueous inorganic acids, water and steam.
- Type ETP – (also known as Viton Extreme) – Offers excellent Chemical resistance and greater performance compared to standard compounds. Used for Automotive & Off-Road – High pH lubricants, greases, & Coolants. Oil Exploration/ Production – Drilling Mud, Sour Wells. Special sealing requirements – solvents, coatings.
Additionally, specialty versions of these types are available to provide improved low temperature flexibility. These are called LT types, for example, GLT, and GFLT, and these perform like the A, and F families, respectively; GLT & GFLT provide improved low temperature performance with a TR (10) of -40°F and brittleness to -76°F.
