Wear Rings

Wear rings are used to help keep the piston centred, which allows for even wear and pressure distribution on the seals. These seals are used in both piston and rod applications.

Wear Rings

Wear rings should be installed on the lubrication (wet) side of the seal for best performance. For rod glands, the wear ring should be on the pressure side of the rod seal. For pistons, if only one bearing is to be used, it should be on the side of the piston opposite the rod. This arrangement keeps the piston wear ring further away from the rod wear ring. This becomes critical when the rod is at full extension and provides better leveraging of the two bearing surfaces.

Popular materials include glass filled Nylon, bronze filled PTFE and glass filled PTFE. Wear rings are available in butt cut, angle cut and step cut styles.

Straight Cut, also known as Butt Cut rings are the easiest style to install in many applications. Straight cut rings are best suited for rotary movement.

Angle cut rings improve bearing stress at the gap. These rings tend to suit reciprocating movement.

Step cut rings also improve bearing stress at the gap. However, they offer better resistance to contaminants and spike loads. This type of design offers the best level of performance.

UK Seals’ wear rings cater for heavy duty applications where cylinders are operating under the highest temperatures and pressures to pneumatic applications which require low friction, product longevity and self-lubricating properties. Wear rings are available in metric and imperial sizes.

Heavy duty wear rings are usually supplied in split form. (The split is oblique for Reciprocating / Oscillating applications & straight for Rotary). If required, running lengths are also readily available. The BA type is the most widely used general purpose wear ring.

The material used is PTFE with a Bronze content of 40%. For further improvement in performance, a Bronze content of 60% can be made available on request.

Wear rings are available in many different widths cross sections, profiles, and materials including PTFE, engineered plastics and composite materials.
