Types of Hydraulic Seals: A Guide to Rod, Piston, Wiper and Wear Rings

Hydraulic seals are used to contain fluid, maintain pressure and protect moving components within hydraulic equipment. In a typical hydraulic cylinder, several different seals work together rather than one component doing everything.

Piston seals control fluid movement inside the cylinder. Rod seals prevent fluid escaping around the moving rod. Wiper seals keep dirt and moisture out, while wear rings guide the moving components and prevent damaging metal-to-metal contact.

Choosing the correct hydraulic seal therefore means understanding both the individual seal and its position within the wider sealing system.

The main types of hydraulic seals

Piston seals

Piston seals are installed around the piston and seal against the internal cylinder bore. Their purpose is to prevent hydraulic fluid passing from one side of the piston to the other.

This separation allows pressure to act on the correct face of the piston and produce controlled movement. If fluid bypasses the piston seal, the cylinder may lose force, move slowly or drift when it should hold its position.

Piston seals are generally divided into single-acting and double-acting designs.

Rod seals

Rod seals are fitted in the cylinder head or gland and seal against the moving piston rod. They prevent pressurised fluid escaping as the rod extends and retracts.

Because they form the main barrier between the internal hydraulic fluid and the outside environment, rod seals are among the most important parts of the cylinder sealing system. A failed rod seal generally produces visible external leakage, pressure loss and declining equipment performance.

The seal must make sufficient contact with the rod to retain fluid without creating excessive friction. A small lubricating film is normally required between the seal and rod surface, so the rod seal and wiper seal need to work together rather than being selected independently.

Rod seal designs include single-lip, double-lip and multi-lip configurations. Some applications also require a buffer seal or anti-extrusion ring to manage pressure peaks and protect the main sealing element.

Wiper and scraper seals

Wiper seals, also called scraper seals, sit at the external end of the cylinder. As the rod retracts, the seal removes contamination before it can enter the hydraulic system.

Without an effective wiper, dust, mud, water and abrasive particles can be carried into the cylinder. These contaminants may damage the rod seal, score the rod or bore and contaminate the hydraulic fluid.

Wiper seals are particularly important in exposed applications such as construction machinery, agricultural equipment, lifting systems and mobile hydraulics.

Wear rings and guide rings

Wear rings are also known as guide rings or bearing rings. Unlike piston and rod seals, their main purpose is not to contain hydraulic fluid.

Instead, wear rings support and guide the piston or rod, keeping moving components correctly aligned within the cylinder. They absorb transverse loads and help prevent direct contact between metal surfaces.

A poorly guided piston or rod can place uneven pressure on the seals. This may result in accelerated wear, scoring, extrusion or leakage, even when the primary seal is otherwise correctly specified.

Wear rings are used in both piston and rod applications. They are commonly manufactured from PTFE or other low-friction engineering plastics selected for their wear resistance, dimensional stability and chemical resistance.

Supporting seals and components

The four main seal types do not always operate alone. Depending on the pressure, movement and cylinder design, the assembly may also include buffer seals, back-up rings and static seals.

How to select the correct hydraulic seal

Seal dimensions are important, but they are only one part of the specification. The operating conditions determine which profile and material will provide reliable performance.

Where a cylinder has suffered repeated seal failure, replacing the visible damaged seal may not solve the underlying issue. Rod damage, misalignment, unsuitable fluid, excessive pressure or a failed wear ring can all shorten the life of a replacement seal.

Different symptoms can indicate problems in different parts of the sealing system.
